Duane,
I looked at the Halligan page and here are some comments.
HV1CN was established in Vatican City in 1961 with equipment donated by
Hallicrafters as shown in the photo superimposed on the HV1CN QSL.
I have two QSls from the 1961 operation with no photo. The operation was
led by Maxwell Meyers W2BIB. Max as he liked to be called was responsible
for the equipment being installed. He also helped get Larry W9IOP, a world
famous CW Operator to make a trip to really put HV1CN on CW during a
contest. This was wriiten up in a 1962 CQ Magazine.
The fellow in the back of the picture (Bill is front left) is Dom, the
station Manager who was a I1.
HV1CN is the only station that has ever been set up in the Vatican proper.
Brother Ed, HV3SJ (Sociey of Jesuits) was actually in an apartment several
blocks away. His call was used by a number of visting operators such as
Gunnar, who I worked in a 1972 Contest. There have been two more Vatican
calls and these were also out of the City but nearby. Brothers K4TEA and
K4TKM visited in the 1980's for another Cw operation.
I remember the later Africa Dxpedition (used FPM 300's) but was only 3 or 4
when Bob Leo operated on his Safari. Bob Leo is now W7LR.
Others that were involved in the HV1CN station beside W2BIB, W9AC, and W9IOP
were Vic Clark, W4KFC, and Stu Meyer W2GHK (no relation to W2BIB) before
Stu's days at hammarlund. I find no record of HV1CN being on the air sine
about 1965 but maybe Max HB9RS knows better.
HV1CN was the first real test of the SX-115 receiver replacing the older
Sx101. I remember W9IOP saying he really liked the 115. I have some
stories about W9IOP but they are not Hallicrafters oriented.
