[Hallicrafters] S38 Front end

VERY good one, all things considered. Still, I am amazed that they did
not save a little more by using a 70L7GT and using only 4 tubes- which
would have been a very noteworthy saving on overall costs.

If I find a rough but workable S38A, I will do the minimum to get it
working and safe, then remove the 30Z5 and 50L6 and replace them with a
70L7, and see how it sings for me. IF and WHEN I do this, I will notify
the list.

Yes, double shielding and proper attention to precision of mechanical
linkages and structure contribute to the quality. One of my likes about
the S38 and the A is they are mechanically stable and certain in their
action, where as my Mark 2 E is sloppy with play apparently from
structural members flexing under the tension of action.
