Some of the toughest problems an engineer can face is trying to design a 
radio that can be built for a few bucks. Finding ways to save pennies on 
every one built can be a huge challenge. Designing for the military is a 
whole different ball game, where cost is not something to be overly 
concerned with. With lots of funding, construction on a nicely machined 
aluminum chassis with shielded compartments certainly make things easier 
even with the far superior specs required.

The people at Hallicrafters who had to build a radio like the S-38 for 
around $15.00 to sell it for around $30.00 I think did a damn good job.
