Wow...  You are absolutely correct.  I just checked mine.  If you know
its brass, they probably nickel plated it.  If one was missing, you
could easily make one on a small lathe out of polished aluminum.

They did this on a number of their radios.  I agree with the s-40, but I
think they also did it on some models of the the S-38 as well.

There has been some discussion regarding trim around the small knobs of
the SX-42. I have an origional owners manual with the dark picture of
the SX-42 on the front cover, & the only knob shown to have a trim ring
is the volume contro knob. If these trim rings are anything like he
large knobs of the S-40-A, they may come loose, and also, they're made
of brass, & then plated with something silvery.
