Many people do.  Remember that even if the gear is rated up to 125, as 
is often the case, that's at the top of the range and this is old 
equipment.  It does put undo stress on the unit.

SAFETY ISSUE!  NO, a "variable AUTOtransformer" does not provide any 
isolation unless it is specifically stated to be an isolated variable 
autotransformer.  By definition, an autotransformer is one winding, 
hence no isolation.

Various types of line (mains) regulators are available.  The major 
caveat is to ensure that the one chosen outputs a relatively clean sine 
wave without excessive harmonics.
