[Hallicrafters] Paint colors

You hit on something there, Glen.

I've never repainted a boatanchor (I probably should) but I've been
following this thread with considerable interest.

Would it be possible to collect the color formulas (by company, I
presume) that members of this community have found to be excellent
matches for the various cabinets and panels. The collected wisdom could
be posted in the "Restoration Tips" segment.

Living in a major metropolitan area does help! There is the store that
is just over 2 miles from me that I usually deal with. Then there is a
warehouse operation that deals mainly with large industrial customers
(especially those in the telecommunications
field) but also deals in small quanities that is about 10 miles from me.
They often have in stock many of the colors that were used on equipment
since World War II.

They had a perfect match for the shade of gray that Collins used on the
KWM-1 (different from any of the other amateur equipment including the
S-Line) that was even in spray cans. When I painted a cabinet for a
customer (the cabinet did not need complete stripping, just sanding down
in places) I had to get the light "just right" to even be able to tell
where I had painted and where I had to paint.

Just like with any company if you are dealing with either contract
stores or franchise stores not all outlets are going to have all
services. However, once you have the color formula then any store
should be able to mix the proper paint. I have several colors matched
and I have made the formulas available to anyone who has asked for them.
But, those colors are mostly in Collins and Heath paints although I do
have the one for the National gray that was used on the NC-2-40D series
of receivers.

You should have also included a bit more, that you've said earlier: "The
stores that I deal with are factory owned. Your local store may be a
franchise and thus isn't as capable, customer orientated, etc."
