[Hallicrafters] Re SX-17 Lamp Comment From Chuck Dachis

Seems to me that the acid test for whether this is a
factory option might be to take the lamp socket
assembly off the panel and examine the hole(s)
closely.

A hole drilled through the panel after it was painted
would leave a bare-metal edge to the hole and possibly
exhibit some chipped paint. A hole punched in the
panel when it was manufactured, before painting, would
appear different.

Also, a hole made with a hand drill rather than a
drill press would probably show a ragged edge, and
maybe a trace of a burr would remain. Plus, the paint
might be scarred somewhat as above. You might even
find evidence of the drill having "walked" on the
panel if the hole wasn't properly center-punched.

If someone could make an accurate template of the
holes in a receiver, then sompare this to another with
the "mod," both as to holes and placement on the
panel, this might answer the question.

Do a little detective work.

By the way, I am puzzled by the holes in the panel of
my SX-28 that look as if they once were used to mount
a military nomenclature tag obscuring the "Super
Skyrider Model SX-28" logo. Anyone ever seen another
panel like this? Anyone have such a nomenclature
plate? I'd like to find one for my receiver.
