Below is a quotation from Chuck Dachis regarding the front panel lamp of the

I have never seen a factory mod for a dial light for the 17. I suspect these 
are a user modification. As far as I know the only external silver dial 
units with factory installed lights are the 9, 10, 11, and 12. Great idea, 
guess H was trying to save a few cents per unit on the 16,17, 18 and 19.

Some claim that every one of the apparently modified units is identical. Now
that is not likely if individuals did this each on their own. Some variations
would be evident. Which raises the question we probably can no longer find the
answer to: Did somebody produce a kit to make this mod? If so, this might
explain the claims of the sets all appearing to be identical.
