Now that you have one yes answer and one no answer.....
BTW I've heard yes/no before as well.
1) Pick a capacitor vendor and check their website. Generally they
have a wealth of info. You might even check for a local rep, give them
a call and ask. Get it from a pro.
2) If you can guarantee that one end is always positive with respect to
the other, then you could use an electrolytic. Note: just because one
end is on ground doesn't mean the other end is positive. BTW electrolytics
go off with a bang.
3) At 1 uf you can easily buy a non-polarized one from digikey or mouser
etc.

Just pulled a 1uf/400 vdc out of the SX-17. It is a bees wax aerovox unit
and I assume a non-polarized unit. Can a non-polarized cap be replaced with
an electrolytic as long as polarity is observed?
