At least here in Midland Mi, 220 VAC wiring according to the code, is Red
and Black wires for hot, White for neutral, and a bare ground wire.
I'd not want to use 2 wire plus ground for 220 as someone, some day, might
tap into it thinking it's 110.

# 12 with ground for up to 20A @ 240V, #10 with ground for up to 30A @240V.
For 240V circuits, the white conductor should be colored black which may be
accomplished with a magic marker or paint. This indicates that both wires
are
hot. The wire should be solid. TW or tool wire can be used in conduit,
otherwise, the cable may be romex or BX depending on local codes and ytour
personal
desire if the code does not specify. Outlets should be matched to circuit
capacity and wire should be wrapped around the screws in a clockwise
direction so
that when the screw is tightened. it will pull the wire into the connection.
