[Hallicrafters] Tube lugs fragile?

Let me say first that I appreciate this thread as
being relatively new to restoring old equipment I've
wondered what others do.

>From my own experience, many times the lugs are full
and there is no room to squeeze in an extra wire.
So, you are left with attaching a replacement componet
to the leads of the old one or removing the old leads
all together. Works ok for components but not so well
if a stranded wire has broken off or is damaged.

I've been fortunate enough to pick up a good Hakko rework
station as well as a SMD rework station. For you tube folks
SMD is surface mount device - usually much much smaller than
any tube vintage component. However the ability to direct
concentrate hot air on a solder joint has been very useful.
(As opposed to other types of hot air.)

I just make sure there is no solder left on the connection (I use a HAKKO desoldering unit, but I've done the same with the metal tape or a plastic suction). I do not try "unbending" the connection. Using high quality "nippers" such as an Erem, I carefully clip the old wires away from the terminal and the wires usually fall off the terminal.
