Bill,
Thanks for the lead on the speakers. I think I'll order a couple for the
growing S-38 pile. Just wondering, how do they sound on voice and CW? I
tried some newer foam and rubber surround 4 inch and 3x5 inch replacement
speakers in a Halli S-107 and a National NC-60 special and wasn't too happy
with the overall sound, it was a bit "muddy" for lack of a better term. The
newer speakers are designed for enhanced low frequency response, are
efficient and sound great once built into a proper sized and ported (or
sealed depending on size) enclosure. Unfortunately my receiver cabinets are
far from optimum speaker baffles. I've come up with enough new old stock
and used old speakers lately at hamfests to cover the immediate needs, but
eventually I'm going to have to order new speakers somewhere.
Older speakers were of stiffer cone design and among other benefits to us BA
types, didn't pass much below 150hz, so hum was never audible. Not so with
some of the newer speakers.
