I had the same problem in the matching SX-111 receiver and asked the same
question. The fix went from heating the form to loosen the slug (did no
good), very carefully drilling out the slug with a dremel type tool to
outright replacement of the entire coil/slug assembly.
The dremel is a good solution if you have the right bit, a steady hand and
replacement slugs. Only a small amount of slug needs to be removed before
the entire slug would fall out.
All respondents agree this is a common problem and the slugs over time split
or crack through the center, and when you try to turn them they basically
lock themselves in place as they expand when turning and dig into the walls
of the form. I confirmed this was my problem through very close inspection
of the slug with a magnifier and strong light. They were cracked.
I left it alone since the receiver worked well anyway. I tried to find
replacement slugs but gave up. Good luck with the restoration.

Subject: [Hallicrafters] HT-37
I am about to start an ambitious project to replace the mixer/driver coils
in an HT-37. Some of the slugs are stuck in the coil forms. I have tried
and tried to free them to the point where I have damaged the 20M forms to
destruction.
Has anyone removed these coils and have any tips or traps to look out for?
I have a stripped chassis that has a good coil set that I will removed and
use for the replacement.
