[Hallicrafters] SX-42 Price?

Hi Rich, 

The SX-42 prices are all over the place from a parts doner I saw at a hamfest 
this summer for $50.00 to $300.00 or more at auction. The price depends on 
cosmetics and working condition as you would expect plus whatever the traffic 
will bear.


There are several things to check when dealing on one of these babies. 
Cosmetically, the dial and S-meter plastic, the presence and working condition of 
the tuning clutch, (the knob frequently gets broken off) the presence of the 
metal cover over the RF section and the presence of all the knobs, especially the 
volume control knob which has a metal ring on it in addition to the skirt. 
Obviously, the next question is, "does it work?" These are great receivers but 
there are some places in side that are difficult to get to when it comes to 
parts replacement. If you find one in operating condition, it will be a lot 
easier to restore.

If you happen to luck out and find an SX-42 with the optional tilt base, grab 
it fast.  That base alone has sold for over $500.00 although the original 
cost was $7.50. Alas, like speakers, not a lot were sold and they are impossible 
to find.
