Hi Rich,
Pardon my question, but if you're looking for one to restore, why do
you say, "in good to excellent condition"? Do you meant one that's in
totally good to excellent condx, not requiring any work? Or one that's
externally in good-exc. condx but needs internal work which may be
"simple" recapping or full troubleshooting with replacement of anything
that needs it? Or one that's electrically good-exc. and needing
cosmetics? "Simple recapping" isn't a trivial matter in an SX-42. I
think you get my line of thought and hope you're not offended by it.
All said, I sold a refurbished SX-42 a few yrs ago for (I think) $425,
incl delivery not too far away. It had a refinished panel and cabinet,
professionally done, and had been internally refurbished/recapped/etc.
Reading Roy's post, I let it go way too cheaply. I had 2 panels &
cabinets done at that time, and have not gotten a round tuit for
completion of the other rcvr.
That said, the following may be of interest, I prepared the writeup a
while ago:
SX-42 -- I've had this one for several years, but it is untested. I
had the panel painted and silkscreened and the cabinet professionally
painted at the same time I did another SX-42. They are in
excellent condition. The rcvr is disassembled partially, the panel is
still off. All parts & knobs are present, incl. the oft missing
bandspread clutch knob and shaft, probably a few screws missing. I have
almost $150 in the panel & cabinet work, will sell it all for $250, plus
shipping cost & $20 for packing trouble & matl, probably 2 boxes. Pickup
would be nice, save the $20 and shipping.
I've amassed a number of projects that presently hold more interest to
me, so would let this go at what I've got in it, to someone who would get
a round tuit & take it to completion.

Subject: [Hallicrafters] SX-42 Price?

I am looking for a boat anchor to restore. I had an SX-43 as a kid and,
at
first, I wanted to get another to restore. The SX-42 is superior and is
close enough to what I remember to satisfy my nostalgia. ;-)
What is a good price for one in good to excellent condition?

Thanks for the advice
