Just came across this classic example...

"My dad was a ham radio operator and this was one of
his receivers.  This morning I hooked up a speaker and
a short antenna and was tuning in some stations when
smoke started coming out of the back of the receiver. 
I unplugged it and let it cool.  I plugged it in again
- it was still receiving the station - but it got hot
again so I unplugged it.  I opened the top and bottom
and could see no evidence of charring or melting
except possibly the discoloration around the fuse on
the back...the new owner (who will know more than I
do) can deal with the problem."
