[Hallicrafters] SX28 sensitivity

And conversely, I have found many resistors in many old radios out of spec
and only changed a handful that were outrageously out of spec. My theory is
these radios were never meant to be precision pieces of equipment. So, if
the resistors are out of spec, so what. Just my opinion and have not been
disappointed yet.
I guess it depends on your point of view. Of course, if performance suffers
from original specs and a resistor is the problem then by all means change
it. However, if the performance of the radio is where it should be, leave
them alone even if out of spec.
In addition, (you may think I'm crazy with this statement), when a resistor
goes bad, its value usually increases. Since the dates of manufacture of
these radios was during a time of lower line voltages, I figure, the higher
resistances are a good thing (within reason) to keep DC supply voltages
fairly close to original design specs. In other words, with today's higher
line voltages, the increase in resistor values might just be OK. Changing
high value resistors to lower values with today's higher line voltages may
just be the wrong thing to do. Am I crazy?

In my recent SX-42 and SX-62 rebuilds, I found all but about a half
dozen resistors out-of-spec (10%) in each radio (and these sets are
"newer" than the SX-28). Many were quite high -- up to 100-percent off
value. This led me to replace every single resistor in both radios. It
may have been theoretical overkill, but I'm pleased with the results and
don't have to worry about performance deteriorating for many years --
possibly for the rest of my listening days.
