[Hallicrafters] Boy My SX-117 Sounds Wonderful!

One of the BEST hallicrafters receivers I ever owned was the SX-117! If they had
a better dial system with 1 Khz. readout, I'd still have mine! It had the BEST notch
filter I have ever used. The notch was very sharp and worked VERY well.
I sold it after I bought an SR-400 transceiver. It's dial system was much better
than the SX-117, BUT the "notch" filter was almost useless, and the "CW filter" had a sharp
"nose" to the selectivity cirve, but the shirts were very broad at 20 db down!
Like the KWM-2 it's SSB performance was stellar, but on CW it left a lot to be
desired. The SX-117 would run rings around it,but it's frequency "resetability"
wasn't very good. I understand they FINALLY got all their "stuff together"
when they designed the SX-115 however! (Or was the SX-117 just a
cheapened version of the SX-117?)

Subject: [Hallicrafters] Boy My SX-117 Sounds Wonderful!
| I am a new HT-44/SX-117 owner as of a week ago. I have the rigs setup and hooked up but I haven't
had a chance to put them on the air yet. Last night I listened for a while on 20 CW and SSB with
the SX-117. Wow, what a nice receiver with good sounding signals, super smooth tuning, no backlash.
You guys were right, the background noise is low on this receiver and the signals really stand out
from the noise.
|
| I experimented with the Notch tuning on some cw signals and I found it to work FB. Maybe not the
deepest notch I've ever used but still took care of adjacent signals nicely. SSB signals sound very
nice and crisp. CW signals also sound very nice and crisp. I'm using the PS-150 built in speaker
and I think it sounds FB.
|
| I dug out my Hallicrafters version of the classic Turner mic. It is jet black with a red 'h' dot
in the center of the mic screen, and it has the name 'Hallicrafters' engraved across the front of
the PTT bar. Its a cool looking mic that really completes the station. Oops, it has some bigger
connector that I don't recognize so I just have to remove it and install a standard 2 pin job.
|
| So I'm almost a 'validated' Hallicrafters user :->>>
