Sorry, but I have to add my thoughts to this. When replacing a line cord on
an old receiver, one should be looking at safety first and appearance
second. 2 wire line cords were used in the past simply because most homes
only had the 2 wire wall sockets and if one side of the line shorted to the
chassis, there really wasn't a shock hazard unless you touched another piece
of equipment that also had a ground problem and the 2 wire plug was 180
degrees rotated from the other one in the same or nearby wall socket.
Now that most everything electrical has 3 wire cords and homes have 3 wire
wall sockets, it is imperative for safety a 3 wire cord be used to replace
an old 2 wire cord otherwise a real shock hazard exists should the old radio
chassis become hot and you touch a metal part of any current model appliance
since they are solidly grounded. Remember, a hot chassis with a 3 wire cord
will not always trip a circuit breaker. It depends on the severity of the
fault; bolted, intermittent or high resistance.
Appearance, nothing could be simpler than just widening the existing hole to
accommodate the larger diameter 3 wire line cord. It is both professional
in appearance and makes the radio electrical safe. This nonsense about the
colors of the tie wraps making the radio look colorful is really silly. If
you want colors, then just spray paint the cabinet day glow orange. There
was another posting about using "hose clamps" to secure the wire. Another
way to do it but not very practical and dangerous.
Anyway, there are many ways to do it but the best is to enlarge the hole,
put in the correct strain relief and line cord and you are done.
