Ron,
My SX-88's previous owner lived in Monmouth, Illinois, and would strap it into the passenger seat of his automobile and take it to the Hallicrafters factory in Chicago for periodic maintenance. Ah, those must've been the days...
Anyway, he became friends with some of Hallicrafters engineers and techs of that wonderful era, and told me of seeing SX-88s on the lab bench being used as test beds for various enhancements. He had vivid memories of seeing the Tee-Notch Filter being prototyped on an SX-88 before it eventually showed up on the SX-100 and others.
Perhaps your SX-88 was one of those used at the factory for development...
