Art,
Congratulations on your find of an SX-23. It is, in the opinion of many, the most elegant design produced during Hallicrafters art deco period.
They are, indeed, relatively rare -- the result of manufacturing problems (tricky to align) and, mostly, the gathering clouds of World War II and the government contracts that focused Hallicrafters HF receiver production efforts on the more straightforward SX-28.
