Hi Jon,
If your/his HT-32 sounds so bad it's difficult to listen to, then
something's not right. I have been using mine, unmodified, for 6 - 7 yrs
almost weekly, and get great, unsolicited, audio reports. I use a D-104
mic. Perhaps your carrier freq. is a bit off.
Mark, K9TR, has heard it a few times recently, tho' I don't think he
made any specific comments re: quality. He had some good points in his
msg to you; in particluar, watch the audio gain & the drive level,
there's no ALC ctrl & it's very easy to overdrive the HT-32/37's.
If you want near broadcast quality hi-fi you'll never get it on SSB
without lotsa mods & disturbing a lot of people on the bands.
