Steve -

Manual copies are available from several sources online as well as on
ebay, it shouldn't be difficult to locate one. While someone may have
one they'd give you, asking for a 'freebie' isn't generally the best
way to get it. There are sites that offer free downloads of manuals.
Original manuals aren't rare, but are scarce enough to cost money in
most cases.

Antenna shouldn't be a big project, since it's a VHF receiver you can
get away with using an FM dipole from an old piece of stereo gear or
easily make one out of a piece of wire, using formulae easily found on
the internet.

Try doing a search for 'radio manuals' and 'antenna formula' as a
start, there's a lot of good info out there. Learning it yourself will
always give better results than having someone else provide the
answers, since you'll be better informed and in a better position to
understand and use the gear.

to listen, not to transmit.

Probably a good thing, since it's only a receiver. Once you have it
hooked up and working, I'm sure he'll enjoy it very much.

Good luck and enjoy -
