Ken,

If you ever see one, try a Tektronix/Sony 323. It's a nice, small ( 7
inch wide, a bit over 3 inches high, about 10 inches deep ) unit that
runs on AC, internal rechargable Nicad batteries, or external DC. It's
single channel, but has the solid Tektronix triggering and sharp
display. Mine is good to 9 Mhz so is great for general IF and audio
work. It's just so light and portable, and is very convenient when
moving it to the boatanchor-in-need.

For more general service work the Tek 465 series still is available in
huge surplus quantities. I have one that I bought used 25 years ago,
use often, and it's never required service. It's larger but still in
the portable class, and is quite capable as a dual channel 100 Mhz scope
with delayed triggered sweep and most any options you will need for
general servicing. I've seen them as low as $100 in good shape at
hamfests, usually 2 to 4 times that on auction sites.
