Another reason for staying with AM; there has always been a large installed base of equipment operating AM. Additionally, AM equipment is simpler, and less critical to tune, as pointed out by Craig. In most applications and conditions, the range provided by simple AM equipment is very satisfactory, due to the line-of-sight nature of aircraft communications.
Q - Why was God able to create the World in only six days?
A - No installed base!

1) AM is much more tolerant of off-frequency tuning than SSB. Aircraft
radios are subject to high vibration and shock abuse in harsh
conditions, making the relative precision required of sideband
transmission and reception difficult to maintain. Aircraft radios are
purposely simple and rugged.
