There are other problems with using the 6146B/8298A in
place of the 6146/6146A/8298 besides just drawing more
current (you can control the current without any
problems). Some transmitters designed for the earlier
tubes work fine with the 6146B/8298A. Unfortunately,
many more transmitters have all sorts of problems
including "taking off" (spurious emissions).
Individual transmitters of a particular model have no
problems while others cannot be "tamed".
For the article on the 6146 family of tubes that
appeared in Electric Radio and several other
publications go to either website that is listed at
the end of this message. The 6146B is really a
different tube from the earlier versions. The only
difference between the 6146 and the 6146A/8298 is the
type of heater ("filament") that is used. The
6146B/8298A has a number of changes in the electrical
makeup as well as being able to run 33% more power.

I have heard or read about being very careful when
contemplating substituting 6146B's for older plain
6146's. The 6146B's produce more output but
supposedly draw substantially more current.
Is this correct and should I just stick with plain
6146's...if I can find them:-)
