The HT-37 manual states that the transmitter requires 370 Watts, and
accepts a voltage of 105-125 VAC.
Assuming you use the variac at 115V, the required current rating of
the variac must be at least 370/115 = 3.2 Amps (P=IE). I'd go a
little higher for transients. Yes, you can you a variac for
transmit.
Price are all over the place. Check the on-line autcions, qrz.com
etc. Hamfests are typically a good place to find variacs. For a 5A
Variac, you're probably looking at around $25.
