No doubt about it, Bob Heils new line of classic mic's look awesome! But you know what? I'd rather use my 40 year old Hallicrafters mic, or the Astatic 10-DA that I got 35 years ago, anyday. I bought an 'Elvis' mic, the Shure 55S at a hamfest several years ago. I should have passed on it I suppose because its a little rougher than I like. Lately I've been wondering if I could have the case rechromed, then slip in a Mouser mic element, and have this incredible looking mic. Now since its the expensive "Elvis mic", I'll likely pass on the $4 Mouser element and get the $5 Mouser element instead :->>>>>
An update on my Hallicrafters (Turner) mic. I reported here earlier that I bought this mic still in the box at a hamfest for $25 maybe 10 or 12 years. Its the classic 60's Turner mic, jet black, red 'h' dot in the center of the screen, 'hallicrafters' engraved in the ptt bar. I tried it out with the HT-44 and I was disappointed to hear its muffled sound. I took the mic element apart in preparation to replace it with the Mouser element. Being me, I tapped the mic element with my finger several times, and tapped it on the bench a few times, jiggled stuff. I also removed and reapplied the foam spacers and rings. Then just for the heck of it I tried it again. Works FB... I don't know whats different or what changed, but it went from muffled to crisp nice sounding audio. Its certainly not an old carbon mic so its not like I'm breaking up carbon clumps :->>>> Its a mystery to me. I tried it out on the air with the HT-44/SX-117 and got a FB audio report from a guy out west.
