[Hallicrafters] signal processing

I am only dimly aware of signal processing for audio in ham/swl terms,
but I think this is what I need.

I have this boffo new Sat800 (plus assorted BAs), which the designers
added a squelch to, but it only works on aircraft band.  I'd love to
have it active globally.  In addition, I'd like to be able to tune the
audio for better intelligibility. 

I figure this has to be post-audio amp but don't know much about it.   I
have a lot of audio experience and it seems like we'd need compression,
gating, and serious equalization.
