Speaking of the "price being right" I have a question you may be able to
help with. I recently bid on an SX-101 on eBay. When I first noticed
it the high bid was $47 and I thought "Oh boy! I can have the receiver
of my novice days for a very reasonable price." even though I knew it
would probably cost twice that much to ship it. So I put in a bid of
$50 and was immediately out bid. I placed a second bid and that was
also out bid by some auto response program. So I thought "Let's see how
bad he wants this." and I bid $100 at which time I became the high
bidder.

For the next few days I watched the auction and started to wonder how
badly I wanted an SX-101. This particular one while far from pristine
was in pretty good shape based on the photos of it. The seller however
was not a ham, not even a radio person as far as I could tell, but
rather a "reseller" who if my guess is correct probably got the 101 for
next to nothing. There was a disclaimer saying that the radio powered
up all of the dial lights and tubes lit up and noise came out of the
speaker but that was the extent of the knowledge of the rig. Having no
idea what the "going rate" is on used boat anchors I had to bid based on
"What is it worth to me" as they say.

To make a short story long, I was the high bidder for several days and
was beginning to wonder what it was going to cost to ship this beast if
it were packed in what I consider a proper manner. Then I got an email
saying that I had been out bid and did I want to try again. I decided
that if I did buy an SX-101 that I wanted one that was in better shape
than this one and preferably from someone who knew its history. So my
question to you and the group is this. What is the going rate on a nice
clean SX-101 these days? I made my first contact with an SX-101 and a
DX-100 and have thought about rebuilding that station some day but this
is the fist time I had made a serious move in that direction and it was
on a whim. Usually not the best way to go about buying something.
Thanks for any advice that you can offer.
