John,
As far as warming up faster, not necessarily. Because what we got to see was
'take 48', it never had a chance to cool down between flipping the power switch
off and back on!
This was also noticeable if you watched the pretty girl, who no matter what she
did, never got a single hair on her head out of place! Never got wet in a
torrential downpour or ever had to make a trip to the 'powder room'. What did
those people have, the 'trucker's bladder'?
Now for you Twilight Zone fans, such as I, there was a program where three
aliens set up shop next-door to a pretty teenage girl. Their mission was to
poison the water supply, kill off the planet's population and then move onto our
planet. But the youngest of the aliens, who rode a motorcycle liked this earth
girl next-door, I think his name was Scott. What were the aliens using for radio
equipment to call the 'home world'? I heard them refereed to as Hams several
times.
How about the one with the old man in the apartment building with other elderly
folks with his radio that kept hearing old radio stations no longer on the air?
Yet every time he tried to let others hear the program, just static. What was
it?
Then the one where the strange light in the sky crashes into a not too distant
swamp. Then the power goes off, but suddenly comes back on in one house. Nobody
has a car that will start, but one suddenly starts by itself. A young boy named
Tommy tells the adults about some Sci Fi story he read that was just like this,
when the aliens came. The people, all loving and friendly neighbors, suddenly
turn on each other like the Civil War all over again. One man has a Ham radio in
his basement. I am not sure if this was shown or not. His wife says he built it
from a kit she bought for him. What was it and what was that antenna?

Well, it may not be military, but I used to and still do love the old serials
and science "friction" movies where they would plug a mic into the headset
jack on an SX-42 or similar receiver and proceed to work "the Supreme Ruler...On
Mars!" Perfect copy, too. Wow!
There was one movie, I can't recall the title, the Send/Receive switch on an
SX-28 got knocked into the Send position during a fight and alerted the good
guys to send help. They did a good closeup shot of the switch in send position
several times during the battle and cut to the good guys on the receive end
discussing how to help. There were switches marked Send/Receive on many
Hallicrafters models including the SX-15, 16, 24 and 25 among others.
Did anyone notice the SX-43 and R-44 speaker in "No Time For Sergeants?"
They actually used it as a prop to listen to band music. Boy, I wish these
old boatanchors would warm up as fast in the shack as they did on celluloid!

John, W4AWM
