While I have not personally experienced Phenolic wafer expansion from D5, I've heard others warn about it so I've been extra careful. I bought the DeOxit D5 PEN dispenser, and I try to use that where ever possible because it deposits the D5 right at the contact.

The pen dispenser has some kind of fiber tip on the end, damp with DeOxit. I press the tip or wipe it against the contacts. It puts the DeOxit right on the contact or where ever you press. Pressing the tip harder will slightly retract the tip and remoisten the tip with D5. Its a dandy way to selectively apply DeOxit.

Obviously many contacts are not accessible to this applicator, so I have to shift to the D5 aerosol and try to be careful. Thats about as good as you can get I think.
