I found on my SX-111 and SX-117, cleaning out the gunk is the only way to do
it.  I tried to tighten the spring loaded nut and it really didn't do
anything except continue to slip and in my mind, accelerate wear in this
critical area.

My solution was the same as yours; however, I very carefully sprayed a
degreaser using the small spray tube that comes with it into the disc area.
Every time a slip occurred, I stopped and sprayed and continued to do this
until the discs were completely clean.  I think using a Q tip or a card edge
does not sound like enough cleaner is getting in there.

Like you, I was amazed at how much gunk came out of the friction disk
mechanism.
