 You've got it right, John. Problem comes in when others want the item
but can't afford to bid higher and might feel a bit
envious/annoyed/p*ssed. I know I've certainly had times when I
wondered if I'd ever find ** piece of gear or be able to afford it,
but the end effect was to simply make me more resourceful and less
dependent on the convenient online approach. It's easier to shop than
to actually locate, after all.

 It's not the end-all that some would have you believe, but still a
valuable tool if used properly. No differently than scouring hamfests,
country auctions, flea markets and so on.

Capitalism is indeed a great thing, along with 'less' government overall.
