[Hallicrafters] Auction Scene

Naw, I'd call it more "Comic Relief".

I didn't interpret this an a call to buy, rather a call the absurdity that
anyone would pay THAT much for one albeit low by some standards.

In dealing with any item that is no longer manufactured, you have several
factors deciding the "going-rate". First is production quantity.
Obviously, the fewer made, the harder to find, the higher the price. Some
obscure Hallicrafters' production item such as an outboard S Meter kit is
rare and would fall into this category.

Next is pure nostalgia. This can only explain why a pristine, but absolute
piece of junk transmitter such as a Heath AT-1 will command such ridiculous
amounts.

Third is utility, usually unobtainable with more modern items. A good
example would be an HT-4/ BC-610 or ART-13. Either is a helluva transmitter
and lots around if you're patient.

Combine two or even three of these factors and good old free enterprise will
drive the price through the roof. I think this is the case of the SX-88 and
others such as the Collins KW-1, 30K-1 etc.

I'll probably never own any of those "collectables", but it's still fun to
look at the pictures.......
