Dear Fellow List Members...

As a youth who was a wide-eyed Novice licensee in 1959, I re-enacted Ben
Franklin's kite experiment for the benefit of my mom and dad one evening
during a thunderstorm...It was before I had erected a 40m dipole that I fed
a long wire thru an antenna matcher from my BC-459A...With the wire
disconnected from the transmitter an NE-2 was clipped between the feedline
and the ground post on the tuner and with the lights out in my bedroom shack
the NE-2 did produce several visible emissions to the astonishment of my
mother...After the "show" and as they left the room, I recall her asking my
father if he thought the antenna was dangerous and a fire hazard...I later
assured her that a knife switch mounted to the board in the window was there
to ground the antenna as a safety measure when I wasn't operating.
