Because It's fun, and less hazardous than skydiving, drinking, or chasing  
young women. I can't really answer for anyone except myself, but for me, working 
 on antique electronics takes me back to a time when life was a lot less 
hectic  and a lot more fun.
 
And running old gear on the air gives you something to DO! I often tell  
people that running an old tube transmitter is a lot like operating a steam  
locomotive. You have to know what you are doing, be aware of many things at the  
same time, and do a lot of adjustments - sometimes while running at full speed.  
Any carelessness and ... BOOM! Modern gear has all these fail safe circuits  
built into it to keep you from harming the equipment or yourself. What fun  is 
that? As Peter Sellers said in a movie, "I never knew that mere electricity  
could be so envigorating."
