Because It's fun, and less hazardous than skydiving, drinking, or chasing
young women. I can't really answer for anyone except myself, but for me, working
on antique electronics takes me back to a time when life was a lot less
hectic and a lot more fun.
And running old gear on the air gives you something to DO! I often tell
people that running an old tube transmitter is a lot like operating a steam
locomotive. You have to know what you are doing, be aware of many things at the
same time, and do a lot of adjustments - sometimes while running at full speed.
Any carelessness and ... BOOM! Modern gear has all these fail safe circuits
built into it to keep you from harming the equipment or yourself. What fun is
that? As Peter Sellers said in a movie, "I never knew that mere electricity
could be so envigorating."
