[Hallicrafters] S40 Help again please!

Brent,
My first thought is whether the tuning capacitor and dial are set
properly. It has been several years since I redid my S-40 but is there
an index mark on the dial to indicate where it should be when the tuning
cap is either fully meshed or fully open? Also check the bandspread cap
indexing. Improper indexing often shows up this way on the lowest
range. Other possibilities are checking to make sure the capacitor
rotor is properly centered between the stator plates, there is a thrust
bearing on the end to adjust this. Both the ball bearings in the front
and the thrust bearing in the rear likely need lubrication anyway if you
haven't done so. You might also see how much "bending" has been done on
the rotor plates, someone in the past may have adjusting these bendable
leaves way out of normal. There is a slight possibility your IF
frequency could be off since the S-40 doesn't have an XTAL filter but if
you used a reasonably accurate signal generator this isn't likely.
Unfortunately changing any of the above mentioned items will require you
to realign all of the bands, so Good Luck!
