While we are on the subject of "old wives' tales" and ham folklore about
antennas, when I first became involved in the 2-way radio business back in
the 70s an "old hand" told me that when installing a base antenna place a
coil of about 5-7 turns of coax diameter about 8 inches or so just below the
connector on the antenna and affix securely to the tower. Then at the
bottom of the tower, where the cable leaves it for entry into the building,
place another coil of similar dimensions wound in the opposite direction.
The idea, he told me, was to "confuse the lightning so it will go to ground
instead of following the coax to the radio"!!
Well, I followed his advice and installed every base antenna that way and
still do. Does it work and prevent lightning damage? I really don't know
for certain, but I always feel better for following that practice.
There are a lot of "old wives' tales" out there! If some of them make you
feel comfortable then go for it!!
