[Hallicrafters] best receiver to mate with HT37

Joe and list,

My 2 coppers worth, as I have both and I'm staring at them at the
moment:

The SX-111 was marketed to go with the HT-37, so the paint scheme and
knobs will match if you get one. Same with the HT-41 linear amp.

The 111 series is electrically about the same as the 101 series.
Performance wise, you won't see a ton of difference. The 111 has no 160
meter band, the early (non-A) 101's usually do.

For both the 111 and 101, the later models of each included a product
detector. All SX-101A's have it, and late model SX-111's have it. I
have a SX-101 (non-A) as well as a SX-101A, and SSB sounds about the
same on either one. The AGC in 101's has a fast/slow time constant
select, while it is fixed in the 111. The 101's have a front panel
adjustable BFO, the 111 does not. This doesn't really detract from
anything as the way the sideband passband switching is set up between
USB and LSB, the BFO usually is kept fixed.

The 101 series is much more ruggedly built, and has a more precision
(and expensive) gear drive to the main tuning. The 101's "seem" a bit
more stable, drift wise, although my 111 has the built in "damp-chaser"
that reduces warm-up drift. The 101's tend to have a higher resale
value than the 111. 101's are rather unique and appealing in style.
You can spot one a mile off on a hamfest table, whereas you may confuse
a 111 with something else.

Both receivers are easy to work on, service wise. As with most
Hallicrafters, finding a schematic that exactly matches your particular
rig can be a bit of a problem. but that won't reduce your enjoyment of
the receiver.
