The May 2002 issue had an article "The St. Louis Switcher", just as you
describe, by N0XFU.
The Nov/Dec 2004 QEX had a very detailed article about converting an
"ATX" type computer power supply for ham use. What was quite clear was
that differnent models had more and more "unneeded" components left out
- you know; filters, bypass capacitors, etc. <g>
Sounds a lot like the stories of TV set "value engineering" in the
fifties. Hey if it will work without this resistor, we'll save $.06 per
set times 200,000 sets - give that engineer with the diagonal cutters an
award!
So each computer power supply has the potential for uniqueness, even if
the same part number. One thing you can count on - the fan bearings will
eventually make noise, even if the RF hash doesn't!
