[Hallicrafters] Guilt Feelings

My major "dumpster crime" (before dumpsters) wasn't tossing a priceless
piece of ham gear. It was worse, believe it or not.
When I was about 14 my grandmother gave me a radio chassis to play with.
She had retrieved it from my grandfather; a farmer who made extra money
by using his hefty pickup truck to haul heavy "junk" out of
townspeople's attics and basements. The handsome radio chassis was
complete and, in retrospect, could probably have been made to function
fully with the replacement of a cap or two. I didn't care to fix it,
however, I was more interested in cannibalizing it to build up my modest
cache of junk box parts.
The old radio was a veritable treasure trove of goodies. I got about 20
tubes out of it, for instance, and buckets of "condensers" and resistors
and mysterious cans, coils and gimcracks. After completely gutting the
radio, I tossed the "scrap metal" chassis back into the bed of Grandpa's
truck. I had some trepidation about doing this, though, because the
chassis was so shiny and nice looking -- chrome plated, even. It was,
of course, manufactured by E.H. Scott.
Well, now that that's off my chest, I don't feel a bit better.
