Everyone has their own "Matching" color for receivers like the SX-42 and
other receivers using the same or nearly the same hinged dull silver colored
lid.
I too found a match for the top of these receivers (HT-32 and SX-101), and
it is Krylon paint, # 1403, "Dull Aluminum" and is available from Ace
Hardware. It is something you probably have to order. I ordered a case at
about $ 6.00 a can or $ 36.00. Sold a few of the cans to other hams who say
the color is perfect. Check it out. I believe you can even find the color
on the internet and you will see it is exact.

As I mentioned earlier today, I've begun my SX-42 restoration project.
Though many, many things need to be done inside the radio, the outside
demands attention, too. Among the tasks ahead is repainting the cabinet.
I like to do the painting of my projects myself whenever possible, but
finding the proper pigment is sometimes a problem -- especially in spray
can format. I thought locating paint for the SX-42 might be a particular
challenge. I mean, the "black" part isn't really black. It's a very
dark, matte (but not flat) gray. TAnd the "silver" lid's actually an
almost titanium hue.
Well, this evening I found very close matches for both at a local auto
parts store. The spray paints are Dupli-Color brand Engine Enamels.
They're very common items. One is called Cast Coat Iron and the other is
Cast Coat Aluminum. Being rugged engine enamels, they'll probably look
great for a very long time. Preliminary testing indicates they'll be
excellent matches for the original paints.
When I get to that stage, I'll post pictures of the painting process.
Many thanks to the generous fellows who've been encouraging me in this
project and providing service notes, diagrams and photos. What a great
group!
