[Hallicrafters] Beware 409 and Fantastic cleaners

Bill and the group:
    I have had many different experiences while cleaning up dial glass and
dials. Some lettering came of with just water, some lettering came of with
mild cleaners and spray bottle cleaners. I did experiment on an old SX-71,
white face, dial. First, before we get our feathers all ruffled up, the dial
was in pretty bad shape. Water had no effect, mild soap and water had no
effect. Spray cleaners seam to turn the white into a yellowish color, could
of been nicotine absorbing into the paint. I also used some 0000 steel wool
with just warm water, this seamed to work best. A little furniture polish
after and this section of the dial looked new.
    Now, on the subject of cleaning the chassis. I just remove the chassis
from the cabinet, remove the dials and head for the nearest car wash.
Yeppers, that's rite, give it a good goingover with the pressure washer.
Just be careful of the wafer switches. After its back in the shop, I use my
air compressor to blow away excess water then its of to the oven, yes, the
one in the kitchen. I always make sure the XYL is at bingo before I do this.
three hours at 200 degrees drys it out pretty good.
