[Hallicrafters] S38D Line safety

I am not familiar with the S-38D construction, but if it is anything like
the construction of the S-38E series, then I do not see the shock hazard
problem.

If the S-38D construction is the same (generally) as the S-38E and unless
one is operating the radio without its "Protective" outer metal case, a
shock hazard does not exist since the outer case is insulated from the
chassis. Great pains were taken by Hallicrafters to ensure the shock hazard
did not exist. This includes the use of large nylon insulators between the
outer case and the chassis including the slide switches and rotary controls
with plastic knobs. The back and bottom are sealed and inaccessible with
heavy cardboard barriers. In other words, the outer case can only become a
hazard through the failure of one or more of these barriers. While this is
possible, it is not probable IMHO since I have rebuilt (5) S-38's and all
the insulating components are in excellent condition after all these years

However, I do agree and urge one to implement the safety steps outlined by
others to ensure a safe radio. I am not saying a hazard does not exist, I
just think the shock hazard is blown out of proportion. Just make sure the
insulating materials in the radio are in good condition no cracks, check for
continuity between the chassis and the outer case, change the cord and enjoy
the radio.
