In October of 1960 I went to Chicago to attend DeVry Technical Institute, on
Belmont Ave near Milwaukee. By November I had made several trips to Allied
Radio where I purchased a used Harvey Wells Bandmaster T-90 and a Morrow
MBR-5 and matching FTR. I also bought a Heath HP-10 mobile supply, a Master
Mobile center loaded whip, and bumper mount. I still have all these pieces.
I just don't have the '53 Ford Custom 2-door to put them in.
Allied had a complete Collins S-Line set up on a huge metal desk, and if you
showed your license you would be allowed to operate the station. I did just
that one Saturday afternoon, and via a phone patch to the next-door neighbor
learned my mother was in the hospital. Nobody in the neighborhood knew how
to get hold of me, but because I wanted to show off for the non-hams
watching me operate in the store, I made a very timely contact with home.
What a great hobby!
