Thanks - yeah S-38's, National NC-60's and such simply put the No. 47 bulb
in the string, along with a dropping resistor to take care of what was left
of the 117 vac.  Sure 'nuff - as soon as the filaments got brighter, the
dial-lamp got dimmer.

Hey guys, you oughta' see my Hallicrafters HA-1 "Village Radio"... I thought
we left 'em all behind, but my friend George, who flew gunships and dustoff
Hueys brought one back, that he gave to me.  We called 'em "Battery Eaters",
mostly used by the covert VC to lure us down... OF COURSE, it works.
