Hi Tom,
 The loctal tube line-up seems like a loctal replacement for octals. My guess 
is that the basic schematic for the S38 would be pretty close, realizing the 
different pinouts for the tubes, no BFO and no multiple bands, all of which 
make it much simpler. 
 As for the 85 volts across the pilot - I'm not sure how the voltage for the 
pilot lamp was obtained. I do remember the lamp glowing brightly when this 
type of set (series filament) was first turned on, then dimming quite a bit 
before coming up to its final brightness. I once thought there was a tap on the 
filament of the 50L6 (octal equiv of 50A5) but there isn't.
