"Oh, yes, I have completely duplicated that original S-38E system with
mint
condition equipment."
Congrats on your setup and story, Gerry! I've had a duplicate of my
first non-homebrew novice setup for a while, consisting of the Knight
T-60 and Hallicrafters S-120. Unfortunatly I don't find the S-120 any
easier to use than it was in 1966, that being nearly impossible! My
S-38's seem easier to play with on CW.
Speaking of S-38's, I picked up a S-38E at the recent Galva, IL hamfest.
This violated my usual rule that involves buying something that spent
the last three decades in a barn and enjoying the process of making the
thing work again. My new S-38E is in excellent condition, with original
tubes, cardboard back, bottom cover and labels. Not a scratch on the
cabinet! I might try my HD-11 Q-multiplier with it as you did.
Here's the kicker. After sliding the main tuning dial pointer on its
cord about an eighth of an inch, I find ALL dial calibration megacycle
markers for the BCB, ham band edges and WWV frequencies to be within an
eighth of an inch of the actual dial markings! This is better than the
accuracy I've seen on much more expensive sliderule dial receivers. I'm
almost afraid to recap the thing in fear of disturbing the calibration,
but will do so anyway.
All I need now is an original S-38 to complete my S-38 collection, as I
now have the A, B, C, D and E. The D is really an ugly duckling but
works (see three decades in a barn comment above). The original S-38
will be nice to find, I believe it was the only one of the series with a
noise limiter in addition to a "real" BFO. The Decatur, IL hamfest is
this Sunday, wish me luck.
