My first "shortwave" receiver was a Halli S-77.
Radio Moscow, BBC, Radio Tirana, .....etal....I was hooked.....
Then I discovered Ham bands (carefully marked on the dial) and listened to
AM hams, a few sidebanders (with that "yoopie" BFO and even a few CW guys
(what are they saying?)
Remember the "airplane engine" noise that appeared across the bands.
The night I remember...a SW station was broadcasting "The fall of the house
of Usher"
I was supposed to be in bed and there was an electrical storm
I sat with my headphones on and listened to the actors thru the QSB, and
static crashes...
It scared the crap out of me......what a great night!!!
That was my first and last Hallicrafters radio. I moved on to other radios
and settled on a Ten Tec and Collins station.
The S-77 is on a shelf and is waiting in line for a complete rebuild and a
move back into the shack.
